Frequently Asked Questions about Wiarton 5 Day Ride

Horses must be highlined.  If you have never highlined a trail committee member will be happy to help you.  There are many videos about highlining on Youtube.  Highlining kits can be bought or you can make your own.  Highlining can happen between trailers and trees or between trees, or between trailers.  A  ladder is a must when you highline.

All rides leave at 10 a.m. sharp.  If you miss the ride out, find a trail member.

Stay on the trail!  The rocky beauty of Wiarton also means there are crevices that can be hidden by leaves/grass.  Stay safe by following the trail leader.

No riding out alone.  A lot of the trails are on private property and a trail may not be horse safe or part of the week's approved land use.   Protect your horse, yourself and the club by only riding out on organized rides.

When in camp on horseback walk your horse.

Families are encouraged to attend, so please keep your language family friendly when out and about,

Clean up after your horses in camp.

Remove all debris from your campsite as this is a working hay field.

If you leave your horses for a trip to the beach or town, ask a neighbour to monitor your horses for you.

Hay and water are available.  It is up to the campers to get these supplies back to their campsite.  Water containers that can be filled at the pump and taken back to camp are handy.

If you don't have a truck, often a neighbour or trail committee member is willing to help you out.

A tent is put up to shelter diners and usually a buffet style pick up.  Campers bring their own chairs/table/dishes/cutlery to use.   A washing station is available at the tent to clean up.  After breakfast,  lunch food items are laid out and campers can make a sandwich, pack a treat and fruit and water or juice box.  Campers need to provide the container to put their lunch in.

Every meal needs volunteers to set up the food, dish out the food and clean up from the meal.   This is a great way to meet other campers and members of the executive and trail committee.

Breakfast  and the odd supper need volunteers on the grill.

Things I Learned

Things I learned at the Wiarton Ride by Jennifer Gonder

  •  the colour of the horse has nothing to do with what is between the ears
  • plan ahead - shoe properly
  • let your horse figure it out on the trail
  • stay away from crevices
  •  don't drink too much and think you're going to enjoy the next day's long ride
  • always carry a rain slicker
  • buy the meals - always delicious
  • participate in the work weekends, a lot of fun and great training for your horse
  • if you have a young horse ride here every day of 5 and you will have a good trail horse!

Thanks to all who made the ride what it is!
